On the Basis of Culture

Culture is a big part of who people are and how they identify themselves. Culture makes people feel comfortable about themselves and gives them a sense of belonging. You can find culture everywhere in the world! All the beautiful sights, colors, and holidays celebrated make you feel like you’re in some sort of fairytale. Culture is the arts and achievements of human intelligence within a specific group. Culture is a reflection of the mingling of indigenous customs and traditions, which had a significant influence on all facets of society. In order to establish and advance their identity, people have fought continuously throughout history.

Starting on September 15th, it is Mexican heritage month, which a lot of people don’t know about because it isn’t talked about enough. Yes, some might be aware, but most don’t celebrate and have beautiful parties that they often do in Mexico. Holidays that we don’t celebrate enough are Mexican Independence day, Dia de los Muertos, Bastille day, and Greek Independence day. Most of us that go to Ike have DNA from other parts of the world that we don’t appreciate enough. That is why it would be incredibly beneficial if the school gave us opportunities to.

Different ethnicities currently celebrate many important holidays, but sometimes people feel embarrassed to celebrate them here in America. Everyone wants to feel like they belong but are afraid they'll be ostracized if they’re too different. The problem with our school, and many other schools, is that culture and diversity are not fully established! Kids are constantly trying to adjust to the change they’re going through and trying to style to their new beginning. Often people are ashamed of their culture and instead blend in with an English-dominant setting than express themselves to the fullest.
