The Cadet Canteen?

I think it’s safe to say that, by now, everyone’s heard of the Satellite Cafe. Sitting cozily in the corner of the cafeteria, people flock daily to grab their Red Bull energized drinks or chewy bagels full of cream cheese. It’s quite a popular item with the students of Eisenhower, and rightfully so! But recent changes regarding the Cadet Canteen could mean competition is underway.

Before the Satellite Cafe was implemented, the Cadet Canteen - a little hole in the wall in the 100 Hall - was the only place serving refreshments during the lunch hours. All funds taken from said Canteen were forwarded and reimbursed to other areas in Eisenhower; such as sports programs, ASB, or prom. From what I’ve heard, they were taking in at least $500 bucks a day - that obviously meant a major money boost for programs at IKE.

However...Now that the Satellite Cafe is here to stay, the Cadet Canteen suffers greatly in sales. Taking in only around $75 nowadays is a massive blow to the programs we used to fund independently. Whether this is because of the placement (I guarantee most freshmen don’t even know it exists) or due to the wider arrangement of options in the Satellite Cafe, our Canteen is becoming old news. To make matters worse, multiple attempts were made to close the Cadet Canteen by none other than our Superintendent. This included refusing to let the students move shop to the Renaissance Store because they, quote, ‘didn’t have a sink in there.’

Thankfully, recent changes—such as a giant advertising poster above the stairs—are helping to bring it back into the spotlight.

Overall, it’s worth taking a peek at the Canteen when you can. You can get refreshments (this includes Redbull!) at a cheaper price and support your school while you're at it. You’ll find it sedentary in the 100 Hall, managed by friendly faces, where our music programs and gym also reside.
