Speech and Debate Going to State

Montserrat Arias Garcia and Luanna Huang placed at Districts in Speech and Debate and will represent IKEat State. Speech and Debate is a club where students can practice their skills in writing, research, and public speaking. Students who participate in the club get scholarships and travel opportunities.

This club requires commitment and is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people who are interested in the same topics as you. Montserrat, a sophomore, is going to State by placing 2nd place in Exempt and 3rd in Congress. Exempt, where they receive three questions, for which you receive 30 minutes to research one of the questions, and you have to create a 7-minute speech to respond to said question.

For Congress, a 3-minute speech is written for a bill that was written by other schools, but for this event, the person is given as much time as they want to research the bill and write a con or pro speech for the bill. Luanna, a senior who has been in this club for 4 years, won 1st place in Open Spoken Word Poetry and 2nd in Impromptu. In Open Spoken Word Poetry, she discussed the divide in America by social class and our minorities not being represented. We wish them luck on May 20th!
