Review on Hush (2016)
Netflix is full of shows, movies, and cartoons. A vast selection of genres, and series that you’ll binge-watch or plan on watching until it’s taken off the page. My favorite part of it all? The horror genre. It either ends up a disappointment on which movie you pick, or your new favorite go-to movie. There are some horror shows that are worth watching, but we’ll be focusing on a movie I picked at random.
The first movie we watched was Hush, directed by Mike Flanagan and released in 2016. He had also directed the movies: "Midnight Mass", "The Midnight Club," and “Doctor Sleep”. I did a bit more research on this movie, and I found out that the actress for this movie is not Deaf and doesn’t know ASL, but she did learn it while acting in this movie. I’ll be going into the review now and other reviews I’ve got from friends I watched this with.
I’ll start with my review, which will have some spoilers. I feel that the movie was somewhat of a disappointment, although I liked a few things like foreshadowing at the beginning and how the killer interacts with Maddie is like a game of cat and mouse. I noticed some grammatical issues in the actress’s ASL, like not using facial grammar when signing. While watching the movie with friends, we felt it was boring, and some things could have been different. For example, give the killer more weakness instead of having him survive most attacks.
On to the friend-review: Friend #1 and I watched this together, and he thought it was boring. It has a cool concept, but things become predictable and stop being fun. Friend #2 and I agreed that the grammar in Maddie’s ASL was off since she doesn’t use facial grammar, and we wished they’d use a deaf actress since there are plenty of deaf actors wanting a job. Friend #3 liked the idea and enjoyed the suspense.
