New Artist: Quinn Christopherson

We are in no shortage of new music nowadays. But with the influx of independent music, and other media outlets, there is a lot of utter crap. But I have sifted through the mud. I have found a small artist recently named Quinn Christopherson. Quinn is a small alternative pop artist from Anchorage, Alaska, where he still lives. He is half Ahtna (a southern Alaskan native group), Athabaskan (A native speaker of any of the several Athabaskan languages), and half Inupiaq (a Northwestern Alaskan native group). Christopherson speaks English too, however, and sings primarily in English. He is also a transgender man, and his first song that gained any traction was Erase Me, which talked about his struggles and noticings after growing up as a woman and coming out.

I think all of the above marks this artist with a very unique perspective and gives him a very honest approach to music-making. His music and voice all feel real, and it really excites me to find him so early in his career. He recently released his first EP, titled “I Am Bubblegum,” which has three songs that talk about different perspectives he has, and each song highlights a separate facet of his mind. I think just based on the EP, he has a lot of potential, but even some of his singles before that have a great sound with deep lyrics, like the song titled Raedeen and the aforementioned, Erase Me.

None of these songs have reached mainstream status, and it's surprising to me because, as an alternative pop artist, a lot of his music stands out from the rest of the genre and feels like the beginnings of a great career in music. I encourage anyone reading to listen to his music and give him a shot. If you enjoy it, he is opening a concert in Seattle, Washington, on April 29, 2022, for the artist Thao. Tickets will be available soon on Quinn Christopherson’s website if you're interested. But even if you don’t enjoy his music, you could at least enjoy his story. It's a very inspiring one, coming into the industry from Alaska, which is nothing like New York. Name three stars you know off the top of your head from Alaska. I bet you didn’t even name one. He is also a person of native descent and a member of the LGBTQ community, yet somehow starting to make it despite the odds.

I hope to make at least a couple of other fans with this article. I have heard a few people say, “Well, yeah, but I’m from Yakima. How could I make it?” Well, how did Quinn Christopherson make it?
