Popular Music?
Have you ever wondered if your music taste is mainstream? Well, this is the article for you!
I have seen an upstream of people start liking certain bands and music that weren’t extremely popular with other people in the early 2010s (normies, as the losers say). Still, with this influx of people, there will always be a slight majority of those who think they are superior for liking mainstream artists. If you’re in that category, this is about you; you’re not different or cool. But if you’re not, then you’re fine, and this article isn’t about you.
Artists like Nirvana, Weezer, Deftones, Sublime, RHCP, Radiohead, etc., are good, and I can’t lie about it. Still, you also have to understand that so many others listen to these artists, and it doesn’t make you some cool kid who gets all the ladies (maybe not if you like Weezer). But it’s starting to become so common that you can’t even find any individuals in these communities because they’re all filled with middle-aged dads or angst-filled teenagers with a superiority complex. I’m all for listening to whatever you want to; however, if you want to express your individuality, do it in other forms than projecting your cultural elitism in everyone’s face. True uniqueness comes from different perspectives and experiences.
While you may see yourself as “grungy”, “emo”, “punk”, or whatever, real authenticity comes from actually trying your hardest to research tons of different styles and interests rather than following some new fad on social media. If you want to dive deeper and actually find some underground bands, look into the local scene in Yakima. So many awesome bands are hiding in plain sight, with bands like Alice Sweet Alice, Take Back, Bad Habit, Monte Claro, Anavanam, Soma, Tethered, and so much more.
