The Impact of Social Media on Students
Social media has greatly impacted students over the years, having both a positive and negative impact on their mental health. Nowadays, it is safe to assume that almost every high school student has access to some form of social media. A few of the most commonly used platforms are TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube.
Having access to social media can be extremely beneficial. There are many things that can uplift and motivate a student. Things like, motivation videos, healthy lifestyle choices, sharing experiences, and socializing with others for support. Social media can also be a place to embrace oneself and enhance creativity. Personally, I love watching uplifting videos when I’m feeling down and unmotivated. I also enjoy watching funny, awe-inspiring videos and reading articles that help expand my knowledge of certain things. These positive things from social media can increase mental health.
However, for younger audiences, social media is also known to create depression, anxiety, and FOMO (fear of missing out). Trends are known to come from social media. Some teens believe that the latest trend must be followed to fit into society. The constant fear of missing out on jokes and trends can overwhelm a young, developing mind. This is when anxiety is created. It is also common for teens to follow other unknown teens. Many students tend to compare and envy others to themselves, often leading to low self-esteem.
Social media can also be really addictive. The constant urge to check for the latest updates and notifications can distract teens from important things like physically interacting with people, spending time with friends and family, and academic performance. Sleep deprivation can also be a contributing factor, causing negative impacts on students.
This is why it is crucial to have a healthy balance between real life and social media. By understanding and acknowledging both its positive and negative impacts, social media can benefit students for numerous reasons.
