Fashion Trends That Came Back

Every year, fashion trends change or evolve. Trends include cropped tops, baby tees, chunky shoes, and butterfly hair clips. But, some fashion trends come back as well. We’ll be looking over fashion trends that have come back from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s. If you think about it, closets are like a time capsule as styles come and go for every season. For that to work, though, you shouldn’t be throwing away your clothes whenever a new trend comes along and buying new ones (ahem, fast fashion). Trends are defined as something that is developed to become more common or popular. Over time, trends eventually come back, and soon enough, you’d see people around wearing bright patterns, styling their hair big and fluffy, or wearing corsets.

In the ’70s, we had jumpsuits, punk fashion, bell bottoms and clogs. During this time, the silhouettes that these people mainly had were flowy and free. Some trends that have come back from the 70’s are bell-bottoms or flared jeans, which can also be seen in denim jumpsuits. Platforms also came back, which match well with flared pants since they help make you look taller. More trends that made a return were flowy dresses, and along with bell-bottom jeans came bell sleeves. Like I’ve said before, the silhouettes people were going for were flowy and floaty. More trends came back, but these are just the ones I will mention since they’re the ones I see a lot.

Now we’re going into the 80’s, with their leg warmers, mullets, and scrunchies. The silhouettes that were seen had been bold and unique since this era of self-expression. What came back was definitely the hair, styled fluffy or shaved into a mullet. It also seems like kerchiefs are coming back, too, and leg warmers. You’ll still see people wearing clothes that they feel express them best, no matter what era.

In the 90’s, grunge-style clothing came along, which is still common today. Bold colors died down into muted and softer ones, with lots of denim. Platforms came back! (Along with combat boots, cargo pants, and scrunchies.)  Ripped jeans were also pretty common then and now. There was also a rise in bell bottoms and denim on denim.

Now, my favorite era (I am biased) is the 2000s—layers upon layers, along with many genres of clothing. Scene also shined in this era, and so did technology. We are seeing a comeback in low-rise jeans butterfly print tanks, with a hint of rhinestones. There’s also ‘Y2K’ inspired fits you can see around the school. With these fits, you may have to thrift for them or steal a few clothes from your parents or older siblings. The makeup at the time was also interesting, which may have inspired nude lipsticks to come out to stop people from having to put concealer over their lips. There were also a lot of accessories that we still use as of today, and glitter. We also still use those tiny bags, from what I’m seeing out in public.

Trends come and go, but they can also make a comeback, which is what I find interesting about fashion. It’s also one of the many reasons people should save their clothes instead of throwing them out every time a new trend comes to prevent waste. People, of course, should also find ways to express themselves in their own way, find their own aesthetic, and find clothes that they feel comfortable with. It’d be interesting to find more people wearing interesting and unique clothes every day, stepping out of their shells, and embracing their creativity. That’s a trend that I think should happen.
