Squid Game 2

(Note; This article will be as spoiler free as possible.)

If you were online anytime around fall of 2021, you probably had seen the new show that had taken over the internet. From brain rot memes to thirst edits on TikTok , the Netflix series ‘Squid Game’ caught the attention of millions online. Considered to be a Korean thriller, horror, and dystopian series, Squid Game became the new online sensation with its creativity surrounding the series. In the first season we follow our protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, a broke and divorced gambling addict in South Korea. Low on his money, he is approached by a recruiter to join “some games” to win a hefty cash prize of 45.6 billion won (roughly $31 million in today’s money as of 2024) by playing nostalgic Korean children’s games. However, Gi-hun realizes the games were never what they seemed and his experience turns gruesome. After winning the games, he is full of grief, rage, and a thirst for revenge to end the games. In season two, we follow Gi-hun on his journey to put an end to these games who are preying on the poor. He’s played these games before, and he won’t let anyone suffer again.

Season two came out on December 26th, 2024. It didn’t take long for the season to take off, with season three being teased to come out in June 2025. The season was just as thrilling as the last with more children’s games being played in unique but horrifying ways. From another round of ‘Red Light Green Light’ to ‘Mingle’, the series took off with new trends on the horizon. But as someone who’s seen the second season (yes, I binged all seven one hour long episodes in one day), I can say it did not disappoint. Though I thought the first season didn’t need a continuation, it was done in a rather well thought out and put together way. It didn’t seem like a cheap excuse to make more money, and it was clearly well thought out for the three years between each season.

Season two has a new set of characters with the ‘ensemble’ type cast that they had in the first season. More characters, good and bad, caught the attention of many fans. Though I won’t spoil what kind of characters we get this season, it’s a pretty entertaining and heartfelt group of characters. Many miss last season's characters and trust me, I do too! But I grew to love and hate so many more characters. I will say this season wasn’t AS heartbreaking as last season was, but it was still gut wrenching at some moments more than others. It was also left on a cliffhanger, which has me gripping my computer by its screen waiting for season three. In the end, season two was well worth it, well written, and just as amazingly cast.
