Christmas Music: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
One of the biggest parts of the Holiday season is the music. While reading this, name a Christmas song you know by heart. I bet you could name one, right? Almost every person who knows of the season of giving knows a carol, a song, a pop jam, or something ridiculous enough to remember ever since you were a tot. Christmas music is essential to the essence of the season.
It’s been around for decades, especially popular in the 50s when Sinatra sang almost all the hits you know.
Christmas music was popular when pop rose, with many hits from artists all over. I asked most of the people I know to at least name one Christmas song in their mind. And believe me, many of them said “Last Christmas” by Wham! Michael Buble, Mariah Carey, Frank Sinatra, Alvin and the Chipmunks came up! All these artists, real or not, make Christmas just a bit more memorable for us as children and even now.
Many of the tunes date back decades, and the verses typically have the same melody with different words slapped on top. Since they’re so simple, it’s easy to find them catchy! Some more upbeat and silly (Like Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer), some more peaceful (Silent Night), some a bit odd (Santa Baby, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus), more religious (Joy to the World) than others, or even just nonsense! I mean, who wrote a song in the 1950s about three little Chipmunks singing about Christmas being late?
Christmas songs are beautiful, charming, a bit silly, and can even be annoying! Whether you love them or not, Scrooge or Grinch, you’d have to at least admit to their catchiness and charm when the season is at its peak.
