Hispanic Heritage Month

It's fall, which means Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration that begins on September 15 and ends on October 15th. Who does it celebrate? Hispanics! - all over the world, but here at IKE, we celebrate a little differently. We get the whole school together and celebrate. Ms. Lopez, a Migrant Student Advocate, and Ms. Aranda, a Migrant Guidance Specialist, describe what happens during these assemblies.

The assembly was on Friday, October 11, for 30 minutes after 2nd period. It had been in the works for a really long time.

Ms. Lopez said, “Every year, we don't want to do the same thing. There are Hispanics all over the world who want to do and see something different.”

Migrant students from all over the world were involved.  Eight committed migrant students were involved this year. When asked about the history of this assembly, Ms. Aranda said, “This is the third year this assembly is happening. There's an 80% Hispanic population here, and we want to represent them all in one. We want to keep that culture alive. Whether or not they know Spanish, they're still Hispanic, and we should all be proud of where we come from.”

This event is one of the many ways that Eisenhower celebrates our students and their cultures. Our students come from many different places, and seeing everyone get a chance to be represented is an important part of what our school can do to make us all feel like we are a part of our high school.
