Famous Turkish People In The World

Sertab Erener: She is 57 years old singer and songwriter from Turkey. She started her career in the 1990s with other famous singer’s help. She became famous in Europe and several other countries after she won the Eurovision Song Contest* in Riga, Latvia with her song “Everyway That I Can”. Her song: Sertab Erener - Everyway That I Can (Turkey - Final - Eurovision Song Contest 2003) *Eurovision Song Contest is a song contest happening in Europe and some other countries outside Europe.

 Aziz Sancar: He is a 75 years old scientist. He works in the field of molecular biology such as DNA repair. Cell cycle checkpoints and circadian clock. In 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Tomas Lindahl and Paul L. Modrich for their mechanistic studies of DNA repair. He is currently working as Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina and he is also the co-founder of the Aziz & Gwen Sancar Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to promote Turkish culture and to support Turkish students in the United States.

Mete Gazoz: He is 22 years old recurve archer from Turkey. He won the gold medal in the men’s individual event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He brang first ever Olympic medal in archery to Turkey. He also took part in the 2016 Olympics in Rio but he didn’t win anything. After Rio, he said, “I promised myself I would be Olympic champion next time in Tokyo.”

Piri Reis: He was an Ottoman admiral, navigator, geographer and cartographer. He is primarily known today for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-i Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book that contains detailed information on early navigational techniques as well as relatively accurate charts for time. His world map is the oldest known Turkish atlas showing the New World, and one of the oldest maps of America still existing anywhere. The other important fact about him, he drew Antarctica before Antarctica was discovered. 

Özlem Türeci and Uğur Şahin: Özlem Türeci is a German-Turkish physician, scientist and entrepreneur. Uğur Şahin is a German-Turkish oncologist and immunologist. In 2008, they founded the biotechnology company BioNTech, which in 2020 develop the first messenger RNA-based vaccine approved for use against COVID-19
