One Act Wonders
Ever wanted to know how to survive a zombie apocalypse, or what it would look like if super villains had to go to therapy? If so, this year’s Senior One Acts would’ve been your go to place for all your undead fighting and bad guy psychoanalysis needs.
What are One Acts you might be asking? The One Acts is a collection of plays that are one act long (hence the name) and are directed by seniors.
This year, the plays were Who Dunnit directed by Aaliyah Enzler, Villains in Therapy co directed by Gwen Flowers and Sarah Shannon, 10 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse directed by Brigham Tibbett, and Lockdown directed by Joshua Waldon. I watched them during the Friday night show, and I had a good time. The shows were all great, full of great work and lots of laughs. When I spoke to Joshua about what he enjoyed about doing the One Acts, he said, “All of it. Everybody really showed out and put their best efforts. They were all casted in multiple shows and had to work hard to memorize all the lines”.
The One Acts is also a place to try new things. Aaliyah said that she was motivated to direct a one act because she “want[s] to be a director after high school so [she] thought that this would be a great experience to see what that’s like”. Many of those casted in the One Acts this year were also faces not regularly seen on the Eisenhower stage. It’s a lowkey environment for people new to drama to be immersed into the world of theater. It’s a place where people can explore their interests in scripts. When asked about why he chose to direct 10 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, Brigham said, “ Last year I was reading plays for 2nd period Drama, and I came across this play that I thought was really funny that I wanted to do either for 2nd period or for a one act. Plus, I like zombies”. If you’re interested in getting involved next year, auditions will be at the end of March. Can’t wait to see what great stuff next year’s One Acts will contain!
